For nearly four years, Michael James has been a dedicated and passionate volunteer at SPRINT Senior Care’s inclusive dementia care residence, Ewart Angus SPRINT Home, where he spends time as a Socialization Volunteer, supporting residents through meaningful conversations, walks, and activities.

Michael’s volunteer journey started when a dear friend and former colleague, who had transitioned to a role at SPRINT Senior Care, encouraged him to become involved with the organization. He started volunteering shortly after the birth of his third grandson. Four years later, he continues to be a familiar and warm presence for many residents, visiting weekly for conversations, walks, and building meaningful connections with residents.

His Favourite Moments

What Michael enjoys most about volunteering is getting to know the impactful stories behind each resident.

“These are people who have lived remarkable lives,” says Michael. “I’ve met university professors, news editors, martial arts instructors, restaurant owners, parents, grandparents, and people with experiences I never would have encountered otherwise”

For Michael, volunteering is about being open to connection and recognizing that every person has a unique story worth hearing and not every resident is the same and that’s one of the best parts of the whole experience.

His Advice for New Volunteers

When asked what advice he would give to someone considering volunteering, Michael’s answer is simple:

Do it. The rewards are astonishing.

While volunteering can sometimes be emotional, Michael describes the experience as deeply fulfilling. The relationships he has formed with residents have taught him valuable lessons about compassion, patience, and the importance of human connection. He describes the residents at Ewart Angus as friends for life whom he may never have met had he not volunteered.

A Lasting Impact

Volunteering at Ewart Angus SPRINT Home has helped Michael develop a deeper understanding of himself and others. Through conversations and weekly meetings with residents, he has gained a greater appreciation for community and the importance of caring for one another.

Most importantly, Michael says:

The point is that they’re my friends, and I care about them.
